John Abendroth was the first NCAA All-American in Weber State’s golf history, and proved to be a consistent and talented performer for the Wildcats in the early 1970s.
John — a native of San Francisco, California, and graduated from the same high school as Johnny Miller and Ken Venturi — was a member of four straight Big Sky Conference championship golf squads under Coach Mac Madsen. He was the medalist at the Big Sky conference championship tournament in 1972 and 1973, tying for the top spot in 1974. For his efforts earned All-Big Sky First Team honors in 1972, ’73 and ’74.
Abendroth and the Wildcats made four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Golf Championships (1971-74), and was the first Wildcat and Big Sky golfer to make the cut at the NCAA Tournament.
Abendroth later was the first Weber State and Big Sky golfer to play on the regular PGA Tour.
He co-founded Celtic Golf Management in northern California, and was for many years a co-host of Hooked on Golf, a popular TV and radio show in San Francisco. He continues to support junior golf in the area.
