Dwight Evans

Dwight Michael “Dewey” Evans (born November 3, 1951) is an American former professional baseball right fielder and right-handed batter who played with the Boston Red Sox (1972–1990) and Baltimore Orioles (1991) in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was a three-time All-Star, won eight Gold Glove Awards, and won two Silver Slugger Awards. Evans played the second-most career games for the Red Sox of any player, surpassed only by Carl Yastrzemski.

    • Called out on strikes in the top of the 3rd. Argued the call, and was ejected. Bernie Carbo finished the game in his spot.3
  2. May 26, 1980
    • Umpire: Don Denkinger
    • Opponent: Toronto Blue Jays
    • Dwight Evans batted for Jim Dwyer in the bottom of the 7th. Called out on strikes. Argued the call, and was ejected. Carl Yastrzemski moved from the Designated Hitter position to Right Field, forcing the pitcher to take Evans’ spot in the batting order.4

    • Opponent: Detroit Tigers
    • In the Red Sox 9th, Evans was called out on strikes to end the inning and a rally. He argued the call, and was ejected. Pinch Runner Reid Nichols (Nichols had run for catcher Rich Gedman during the 9th) moved to Right Field, and Evans was replaced by substitute catcher Gary Allenson.5
  4. June 2, 1986
    • Umpire: Greg Kosc
    • Opponent: Cleveland Indians
    • In the bottom of the 7th, Evans was called out on strikes with the bases loaded, ending the inning and the rally. Argued called strike and was ejected. Indians coach Bobby Bonds was thrown out in two innings later for the same reason. Evans was replaced by Center fielder Steve Lyons, whereas Tony Armas moved to right field.6
  5. April 8, 1988

    • Opponent: Texas Rangers
    • In the top of the 9th inning, Dwight Evans hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Marty Barrett. Barrett charged the mound to fight pitcher Mitch Williams, retaliating for a brush back pitch thrown at Wade Boggs earlier in the inning. Benches cleared and a brawl ensued. Evans and Williams were both ejected for fighting. Evans was replaced for the home half of the inning by Ed Romero at first base.7

    • Evans struck out looking for the second time in the game. Both he and manager John McNamara argued the call, and both were tossed. He was replaced at right field by Kevin Romine.8

    • Opponent: California Angels
    • In the top of the second, Evans was called out on a check swing by First Base Umpire Terry Cooney. Evans threw his bat in protest/frustratoin as it ended the inning. Cooney ejected him. Evans was replaced by Randy Kutcher at right field.9
